Mental Practice

Probably 60% of my practice takes place completely in my head. Meaning, once I've deciphered the piece I'm working on, I set aside time to practise it in my imagination, visualizing my hands, fingers while hearing the music in my mind. It is surprisingly effective. Sometimes even more effective than actual physical practice. First off, you can focus on the music much better as you don't make mistakes in your mind and you don't have to strain your fingers or worry about playing cleanly.

I recommend the book entitled The Brain that Changes Itself by Norman Doidge where you can read about how one can physically alter their brain just by thinking about it...
